Old Costa Rican Editorial Cartoons

Posted in International Comics by mvblair on August 12, 2010

I spend my summers in Costa Rica with my wife. There is a dearth of comic booking here. Historically, there have been no major comic books and only a handful of comic strips published. Costa Rica does have a sustainable newspaper market with about five national newspapers. Three of them publish one editorial cartoon a day. Some a great and some are just caricatures.

In any event, I’ve been reading some an old collection of editorial cartoons at the local library which, unfortunately, has only three bookshelves and is sporadically open. The good thing is that the national library is slightly better and they have begun digitizing large parts of their collection. They’ve now opened a webpage that includes editorial cartoons from the late 1800s through the 1940s. Check it out. Very fun stuff here.
